It adds spiffy aerodynamic bumpers, fog lamps and bigger wheels and tires. Our test car was outfitted with the $3,990 Sport package. One wish list item: It would be nice if the SLK came with automatic headlights. They are so simple to use that you don’t have to take your eyes off the road to make adjustments. Rotary controls operate the air conditioner. The seats are firm, but on a trip to Plant City and back, they proved comfortable. The instruments look great and are easy to read. The gauges have ivory dials with red needles they are wrapped in bright metal trim. That’s the compromise you make with most sports cars. There are map pockets in the doors and a few small compartments for sunglasses and things, but you won’t find any room for larger items, such as an umbrella or a briefcase. The interior of the SLK is roomy and comfortable. The windows seal tight, so there is no wind noise or water leaks. Unlike most convertibles, the SLK is as quiet as a coupe with the roof up. Once everything is in order, though, the top rises and lowers in less than 30 seconds. The driver’s door has to be closed, or the top won’t work. If it’s not in the right position, the top won’t work. There’s a retractable cargo cover in the trunk. Pull it back and the top will go down - as long as certain requirements are met. There’s a red button shaped like the roof of the car planted on the console. The SLK’s retractable hardtop is a nifty item. I couldn’t feel it working, but I can tell you that the SLK stops very quickly. When you jam on the brakes, a computer takes over and applies full stopping power almost immediately. It can detect an emergency stop by the speed at which the brakes are applied. The SLK’s braking system is one of the most advanced on the road. Mercedes equips the SLK with power-assisted steering and power-assisted, four-wheel, anti-lock disc brakes. You are low to the ground and the car sticks to the pavement as if it were on rails. When cornering quickly, the sensation is very much like that of an amusement park ride. The ride is firm, but the car doesn’t beat you up when you drive over bumps. The four-wheel, independent suspension system - double wishbones up front and a multilink setup in the rear - keeps the power well under control. The gears are nicely spaced to take advantage of the engine’s power. The clutch pedal is light and smooth, so you never get tired of shifting, even during rush hour. The stubby little shifter notches easily into each gear. With one hand on the shifter and one on the wheel, you’ll be driving the SLK like you were on a race track. The supercharger - an engine-driven pump that stuffs more fuel and air into the engine - makes a lovely hum as it winds up.Īnd you will rev this engine often. Though not a road missile, the SLK moves away from a stop light smartly when you step on the gas. Mercedes engineers tuned the engine to deliver strong performance at low speeds. This little dynamo propels the 3,000 pound car to 60 mph in just 7.2 seconds. It’s an overhead cam motor with 16 valves. The SLK comes with a 185-horsepower, supercharged, four-cylinder engine. I’m glad Mercedes listened to its customers because the stick shift makes the SLK even more fun to drive. I just spent a week sporting around Orlando and its environs in an SLK with a five-speed manual gearbox. But, they said, they would listen to their customers and if enough people wanted the SLK with a manual gearbox, they’d make one. Mercedes brass said they had no plans to offer a stick shift in the SLK because so few drivers want to shift gears themselves these days. When Mercedes-Benz introduced the SLK a few years ago, many people were wondering when this neat little roadster would get a manual transmission.Īfter all, sporty cars are about the only vehicles left that are still offered with a stick shift.

It was also really quick, I was done in about 30 minutes. Today I did that upgrade, and it went as flawless as my laptops, despite all the extra tweaks and packages I’ve added. With Fedora 25 on the horizon and F23 soon to be out of support, it was time to upgrade. Yet, I’ve left my main workstation with incredible amounts of tweaking alone – until today. The process was smooth, and it was my first experience doing major release upgrades. When Fedora 24 was released, I upgraded my two fairly vanilla configured laptops from F23 to F24 quite easily using Fedora magazines’ upgrade guide. I’ve either reconfigured a workstation or bought a new one so my last few upgrades were outright reinstalls of the newest version. Way to go Fedora team! I’ve had a flawless experience with this distro, I can say I’m quite happy with it.įast forward a few release cycles and my upgrade anxiety is still present. I was thrilled, and honestly a little surprised, to be getting similar stability and predictability while being able to take advantage of the new developments in a more modern kernel. During the dawn of the Fedora.next initiative, I made the switch to Fedora. I made sure my backup-fu was strong, and spent a fair bit of time reinstalling display drivers and dealing with other upgrade nuances. Running CentOS previously worked well, but upgrading was always a bit of a risk for me. This helps relate my workstation experience to the datacentre, and also keeps me slightly ahead of the learning curve getting experience with the new tools that come in, or figuring out workarounds prior to needing to do them in production. I’ve tried to keep my workstation kernel around about the same version as the systems I maintain in the datacentre, typically just slightly ahead. For my main workstation, I’ve been running linux for about 8 or 9 years now and specifically Fedora for the past 3. Our martial arts team work five days a week creating moves no one’s seen before. “That’s fine, but that’s why action scenes are starting to look repetitive. “Most movies will hire a stunt co-ordinator and they’ll have six weeks to get a team together, train an actor and come up with moves,” he explains. But John Wick is the company’s first original film – and its greatest ad. 300, The Bourne Legacy and The Hunger Games are all former clients. So strong is Stahelski’s belief that, alongside Leitch, he set up 87Eleven Action Design, a production company whose in-house stunt team specialise in workshopping original action sequences – which they then pitch to films in pre-production. Look at all the great action movies – Die Hard, Raiders of the Lost Ark – there’s story in the action, and action in the story.” Action directors are always asked, ‘But can you do dialogue?’ and it’s never looked at the other way around. “As a stunt guy, I’ve worked on many big movies where the action was a secondary thought. “Action has never been so popular because of the superhero genre, but it’s also never been so fragmented,” says Stahelski. Chad Stahelski (right) and David Leitch on the set of ‘John Wick: Chapter 2’ with Keanu Reeves It’s a dizzyingly high standard for fight choreography – one achieved by Stahelski’s stuntman philosophy that action is as important as story. Or an early scene in John Wick: Chapter 2, in which the same rhythm is applied to cars to a Warriors-style montage of New York assassins to a knife fight on the subway to a brawl in a hall of mirrors, a homage to Bruce Lee’s Enter the Dragon. Take the scene in which Wick must fight his way through a nightclub: a sequence with an almost frantic, thrilling rhythm, with henchman after henchman falling in time to the beat, with each ruthless headshot landing like notes. Action directors are always asked, ‘But can you do dialogue?’ and it’s never looked at the other way aroundīut, just like music, it’s been composed in a fresh new way. I’ve worked on many big movies where the action was a secondary thought. It then found itself popularised in the West with Keanu Reeves’ break-out hit The Matrix, which both Stahelski and his co-directing partner, David Leitch, worked on as stunt men. It has its roots in the Hong Kong cinema of John Woo films such as Hard Boiled, which combined the balletic elegance of kung-fu with the brutality of gangster movies. Gun-fu, a style of martial arts played out with bullets instead of fists, is not new. It’s a gag that’s opened up further in the sequel, where Wick must navigate the murky world of Rome – complete with its own hitman hotel, which allows guests to order weapons at the bar.īut John Wick is a film of many different stars, and the world, and the joke, and the perfect blankness of Reeves’ performance would mean nothing if they were not aligned with a genuinely inventive approach to action one driven by the hyper-real art of gun-fu. John Wick sketched a surreal, comic-book world: an underground society of contract killers, bound by their own codes and currency a ridiculous, bombastic world that, much like Wick himself, is treated with utmost reverence. Just stay with the guy, open up the mythology, push the action even further.’” “In the end me and Keanu talked and we said, ‘What do we like about the first one? We like the guy, we like the world, we like that it’s a fun action movie that goes to extremes. We said, ‘What do we like about the first one? We like the guy, we like the world, we like that it’s a fun action movie that goes to extremes. But it was Paul-Henri Nargeolet whose life was most entwined with the Titanic. Another crew member was a Titanic obsessive-his endless talk of davits and well decks still rattles in my head. McCallum, who co-founded a company called EYOS Expeditions, had transported tourists to the Titanic in the two-thousands, using two Soviet submarines that had been rated to six thousand metres. For some members of the crew, the site of the wreck was familiar. He even sat in the passenger seat as Lahey piloted the Limiting Factor to the deepest point on Earth.Īfter the wreath sank from view, Vescovo climbed down the submersible hatch, and the dive began. of Triton Submarines (which had designed and built the submersible), one record meant more than the rest: the marine-classification society DNV had certified the Limiting Factor’s “maximum permissible diving depth” as “unlimited.” That process was far from theoretical a DNV inspection engineer was involved in every stage of the submersible’s creation, from design to sea trials and diving. But, to another member of the expedition team, Patrick Lahey, the C.E.O. The team had mapped unexplored trenches and collected scientific samples, and the Limiting Factor’s chief pilot, Victor Vescovo-a Texan hedge-fund manager who had financed the entire operation-had set numerous diving records. In the previous year, McCallum, Nargeolet, and others had taken it around the Earth, as part of the Five Deeps Expedition, a journey to the deepest point in each ocean. Inside a hangar on the ship’s stern sat a submersible known as the Limiting Factor. As is tradition, the youngest-McCallum’s nephew-was summoned to place his hand on the wreath, and he and Nargeolet let it fall into the sea. Rob McCallum, the expedition leader, gave a short speech, then handed a wreath to Nargeolet, the oldest man on the ship. The crew had gathered for a solemn ceremony, to pay tribute to the more than fifteen hundred people who had died in the most famous maritime disaster more than a hundred years ago. The air was cool and thick with fog, the sea placid, the engine switched off, and the Titanic was some thirty-eight hundred metres below. Only the fifth task is what is ordinarily thought of as the primary one: to transport people into the dark, hostile deep.Īt dawn four summers ago, the French submariner and Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet stood on the bow of an expedition vessel in the North Atlantic. The fourth is for the submersible to be easy to find, through redundant tracking and communications systems, in case rescue is required. The third is for the occupants to be able to open the hatch once they surface. The second is to reach the surface, even if the pilot is unconscious, with oxygen to spare. The primary task of a submersible is to not implode. The emulator's GUI was also reworked to make it more user-friendly, and the Direct3D plug-in received further work. Also improved was the Netplay feature of the emulator, which allowed players to play multiplayer GameCube and Wii games online with friends, as long as the game did not require a Wii Remote. īy late October 2009, several new features were incorporated into the emulator, such as automatic frame-skipping, which increased the performance of the emulator, as well as increased stability of the emulator overall. Adjustments to the emulator had allowed users to play select games at full speed for the first time, audio was dramatically improved, and the graphical capabilities were made more consistent aside from minor problems. īy April 2009, most commercial games, GameCube and Wii alike, could be fully played, albeit with minor problems and errors, with a large number of games running with few or no defects. Shortly after, almost all versions of the Wii system software became bootable. The Wii's close architectural relation to GameCube made it backwards-compatibleīy February 2009, the software was able to successfully boot and run the official Wii System Menu v1.0. As with previous builds, differences between consecutive builds are typically minor. The preview builds and unofficial SVN builds were released with their revision number (e.g., RXXXX) rather than version numbers (e.g., 1.03). At this point, the emulator had basic Wii emulation implemented, limited Linux compatibility and a new GUI using wxWidgets. Its name refers to the development code name for the GameCube. Many games crashed on start-up or barely ran at all average speed was from 2 to 20 frames per second (FPS). Soon after, the emulator was ported to Linux and macOS. After troubled development in the first years, Dolphin became free and open-source software and subsequently gained support for Wii emulation.
